Symptoms of Vitamin E Deficiency

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) states that vitamin E deficiency affects certain groups, especially those unable to properly absorb fats from food, as vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that enters the body with dietary fats.

The Society explained that diseases leading to poor fat absorption include cystic fibrosis, short bowel syndrome and chronic pancreatitis.

Additionally, vitamin E deficiency can be genetic, like in Bassen-Kornzweig syndrome – a congenital disorder of fat metabolism.

Vitamin E Deficiency Symptoms

Symptoms of vitamin E deficiency include anaemia, persistent fatigue, dizziness, decreased stamina, and neurological issues like loss of balance and coordination, sensory nerve damage, paralysis signs and muscle weakness.

The Society explains that adults need 12 to 15 milligrams of vitamin E daily. Vitamin E-rich foods include wheat germ, wheat germ oil, sunflower seeds and oil, olive oil and nuts like hazelnuts and almonds.

In case of severe deficiency, one can take vitamin E supplements under medical supervision.
