Some people experience a sensation like pins and needles in their fingers, but what does it indicate?
The German Federal Centre for Health Education explains that this type of pain, often described as needle-like pricking in the fingers, can have multiple causes. A common one is carpal tunnel syndrome, which results from compression of the median nerve in the wrist, causing a tingling and numb sensation in the fingers.
Circulatory Disorders
This pain can also indicate circulatory issues, particularly in cold weather or due to certain conditions like Raynaud’s syndrome. Symptoms of Raynaud’s include a noticeable whitening of the fingers due to reduced blood flow, along with tingling and numbness.
Additional causes can include nerve damage, particularly due to a vitamin B12 deficiency, arthritis, inflammation of the tendons, nail bed issues, as well as injuries or foreign objects like splinters.
Consulting a Doctor
The centre advises consulting a doctor if the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by symptoms such as numbness or swelling. Early diagnosis can be key in treating the underlying cause.
Treatment options may vary from anti-inflammatory medications, wrist splints, and physical therapy to surgery for severe nerve damage cases.
