China has showcased its long-range ground-to-air missile system, the HQ-19, providing a glimpse of one of its advanced ballistic missile defence platforms. Experts have compared the HQ-19 to the American THAAD-ER system, as it is designed to intercept ballistic missiles at extended ranges.
The demonstration featured a launcher equipped with six missiles mounted on a highly mobile 8×8 platform. Accompanying the launcher, China also unveiled the A610 Information Radar, integral to the system’s operations.
The HQ-19 missile uses a kinetic kill warhead that neutralises incoming threats through direct impact. This advanced Chinese system is engineered to counter medium- and long-range ballistic missiles as well as aircraft, making it one of the latest and most capable additions to China’s air defence arsenal.
