Sacrifice: The Hallmark of Commemoration Day

On November 30, 1971, a date etched in the annals of pride and honour, the name of the UAE’s first martyr, Soldier Salem bin Suhail, was immortalised.

His pure soul ascended in defence of the nation’s flag just two days before the union was declared, setting a profound example for the youth of the UAE to follow.

His sacrifice established a legacy of devotion, inspiring generations to uphold the flag with dignity and perpetuate the nation’s glory.

Observed annually, Commemoration Day is a cherished occasion to honour the heroes of the UAE who dedicated their lives in fields of valour and honour.

Our deep respect for the martyrs is only matched by our profound admiration for the Mother of the Martyr, who embodies true love and sacrifice, having given her most precious treasure—the life of her child—for the defence of the homeland and its sovereignty.

As His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, aptly said: “The mother of the martyr is a teacher of men, a creator of heroes, and an inspiration for generations. Her unwavering stance is a beacon for us all, instilling genuine national values in our future generations.”

To the mothers of our martyrs, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and respect for the invaluable lesson you have imparted to coming generations: a lesson of unwavering love for one’s nation.

The Dubai Civil Defence Department is proud of all martyrs who once served in its ranks. Their noble deeds and sacrifices in the line of duty remain vivid in our memories. They answered the nation’s call, upholding their oath to protect lives and property with unmatched courage and commitment.

Today, as we stand in solemn silence before the national flag, we pray to the Almighty to grant mercy to all the UAE’s martyrs and bless them with eternal peace in His vast paradises.
