Germany’s Eye Foundation has issued a warning about the potential dangers laser pointers pose to children’s vision, emphasising the risk of severe retinal damage. The organisation highlighted that laser light, when directed into the eye, is focused by the cornea and lens, concentrating its energy on a small area of the retina. This intense focus generates high temperatures that can melt blood vessels and damage visual cells.
Signs of Retinal Damage
One of the key symptoms of retinal injury is the loss of visual field, often affecting the area responsible for sharp central vision. This can result in a noticeable drop in visual acuity and cause blurred vision, necessitating an immediate visit to an ophthalmologist.
The foundation explained that not all laser pointers carry the same level of risk. Green and blue laser light, with shorter wavelengths compared to red light, is more active and therefore more hazardous to the eyes.
Safety Recommendations
To prevent serious health risks, the foundation advises parents to ensure children do not play with laser pointers or expose their eyes to them. Proper supervision and awareness can help protect children’s vision from this hidden danger.
