MIT Develops Technology to Audit AI Responses

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has unveiled a groundbreaking tool designed to detect inaccuracies or “hallucinations” in artificial intelligence (AI) applications. This term refers to incorrect or bizarre responses sometimes generated by AI chatbots when addressing user queries.

To assist human fact-checkers, who often must sift through extensive and complex documents used by AI models to generate answers, MIT researchers have developed an intuitive system aimed at expediting the verification process.

Dubbed SymGen,” this highly sought-after tool is intended to mitigate the labor-intensive and error-prone nature of current AI response auditing methods. According to MIT, these challenges have discouraged some users from fully embracing AI chatbots as a reliable resource.

SymGen works by presenting AI-generated responses with direct excerpts that pinpoint the exact location of the information in the original source, such as a specific cell in a database. Researchers claim that this innovation reduces verification time by approximately 20%, addressing one of the major drawbacks of using large language models (LLMs) in conversational AI.

Enhancing User Confidence

Shannon Shen, a researcher at MIT, explained that SymGen empowers users to trust LLM outputs by providing an easier way to scrutinise and validate the information offered.

However, the researchers acknowledge that the tool currently operates only with structured data sources, such as audit tables and other organised datasets. Its effectiveness is also dependent on the quality of the source data used to train the AI model.
