The UAE’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Launches Charter for AI Development and Use

The UAE’s Office of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications has launched a Charter for the Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence in the UAE.

This initiative aims to achieve the objectives of the UAE’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and reflects the leadership’s vision of transforming the country into a global hub for developing and adopting AI solutions across various sectors.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, emphasised that under the guidance of its wise leadership, the UAE government is committed to establishing the nation as a global leader in artificial intelligence.

This ambition involves developing a futuristic infrastructure and an integrated ecosystem that employs AI across all vital sectors while ensuring the highest standards of safety and privacy, thereby enhancing public trust in these technologies.

The Minister further stated that the UAE is at the forefront of initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of artificial intelligence and its applications. The country is intensifying efforts, accelerating progress, and continuing to strengthen global partnerships to establish optimal standards for the use of AI technologies.

The UAE is dedicated to providing robust protections for the rights of individuals, users, and communities while ensuring the ongoing development of the digital landscape in the country.

The Charter for the Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence aims to ensure a positive and lasting impact on communities. It establishes principles and foundations for applying the best AI models, which include strengthening the harmonious and beneficial relationship between humans and machines and ensuring safety, fairness, inclusivity, and equality.

This approach fosters a responsible development of AI technologies, ensuring they are accessible to all. The principles also encompass data privacy, transparency, human oversight, governance, accountability, technological excellence, human commitment, and peaceful coexistence with AI.

Additionally, the charter addresses the need to enhance awareness in the field of AI for an inclusive future and to benefit from AI advancements in a way that ensures equitable technological access for all segments of society. It also emphasises compliance with the existing laws and agreements in the UAE concerning the development and use of artificial intelligence.
