US company HII has launched its first amphibious transport dock from its shipbuilding facility. The launch process involved transporting the vessel from land to a floating dry dock using specialised rail carts, followed by preparatory steps to transition the ship into the water.
The Flight II San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks represent the US Navy’s efforts to modernise its amphibious capabilities, replacing older ships to better support amphibious operations by transporting Marines, landing craft, and essential equipment.
These new ships will feature advanced technologies such as the AN/SPY-6 radar, enhancing their ability to detect and track threats in maritime environments.
