SEHA Introduces Advanced X-Ray Blood Processing Device

SEHA has announced the introduction of a cutting-edge blood scanning device at Abu Dhabi Blood Bank Services, marking a significant milestone in enhancing blood safety and quality standards in the region.

The RS 3400 device uses X-rays to process blood and its components, significantly reducing the risk of Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD) in patients receiving blood transfusions. GvHD is a potentially life-threatening complication where the white blood cells from donated blood attack the recipient’s body.

Unlike traditional irradiation devices that use radioactive materials such as cesium-137, the RS 3400 utilises a single X-ray source. This innovation eliminates the need for complex licensing and protective measures associated with radioactive materials.

The RS 3400 features a faster irradiation cycle that can handle up to six units per cycle compared to previous devices. This increased efficiency means a greater capacity to meet the growing demand for blood products within Abu Dhabi’s healthcare system.

Dr Hamad Saif Al Nuaimi, Director of Abu Dhabi Blood Bank Services, stated, “This project is supported by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, reflecting the government’s commitment to equipping the healthcare sector with the latest technologies and advanced resources.”

In 2023, the number of donors in Abu Dhabi reached nearly 66,000, an increase of 37.53% compared to 2022. These donors contributed to providing approximately 99,000 units of blood.

Individuals can begin donating blood from the age of 18, provided they are fit and generally in good health.
