Useful Tips for Donating Blood in the Summer

The German Red Cross warned that many people suffer from health issues during the hot summer due to sweating, dehydration, and circulatory problems.

While donating blood might not be the first thing that comes to mind during this time, the German Red Cross Blood Donation Service has clarified that it is generally safe even in high temperatures.

While summer can be a more suitable time for blood donation as people tend to drink more fluids, if you feel dizzy or unwell, it is best to avoid donating blood.

Here are some tips and guidelines from the German Red Cross to ensure a safe blood donation experience:

Drink More Than Usual

Increase your fluid intake to three litres a day. This should include juices and herbal teas. It is important to drink plenty of fluids before donating blood and to spread the remaining intake throughout the day.

Proper Nutrition

Consume a sufficient amount of food before donating, while avoiding fatty foods directly before donation, as the body requires a long time to convert such foods into energy. Foods rich in carbohydrates provide an adequate amount of energy. Fruits like pineapple and watermelon help with fluid absorption, and salty snacks like nuts can replenish the salts lost through sweating.

The German Red Cross also recommends avoiding exercise after donating blood, staying out of direct sunlight, covering your head, and remaining in shaded areas.
