South Korea has started the development of a ground-based version of its Close-In Weapon System CIWS-II to bolster its defences against threats from North Korea, including artillery, drones, ballistic and cruise missiles.
Designed as a short-range defensive weapon, the CIWS-II is engineered to detect and intercept incoming threats that penetrate outer defence layers, such as missiles and aircraft.
The ground-based CIWS-II aims to counter a wide range of threats, including long-range artillery, short-range and close-range ballistic missiles, multiple rocket launchers, low-flying cruise missiles, and drones.
