Every year on June 23rd, Emirati women along with women from around the world, celebrate World Engineering Day.
This day shines a light on the achievements of women in this field and provides encouragement and support to every woman who wants to enter the world of engineering and innovation.
Women have and continue to contribute to various fields within engineering.
The wise leadership of the United Arab Emirates, since the era of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, has been keen on involving Emirati women in all aspects of life, providing support and a conducive environment for women to excel in their work and stand on an equal footing with men.
It is a constant and continuous affirmation that empowering women is an essential part of the culture of the United Arab Emirates, which recognises the ability of Emirati women to face and overcome difficulties and obstacles in various ways, achieving their goals and fulfilling their roles in the growth and progress of our beloved country.
Recently, Emirati women’s interest in the field of science in general, and engineering in particular, has grown, thus engineering, with all its details and challenges, has become attractive to women, whereas these fields were previously limited to men only.
Many Emirati female engineers have proven their presence in the field with excellence that surpasses expectations. These include Hessa Al Matroushi, an engineer at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, and Sa’ad Al Shamsi, the first Emirati female pilot, who obtained a doctorate in aviation science management from the University of Hertfordshire.
Moreover, Asmaa Mohammed, who has achieved significant accomplishments in Emirates Airlines, as well as mechanical engineer Rawan Al Aidarous, who works on the Al Taweelah alumina refinery Project at Emirates Global Aluminum, and many more creative women in the field of engineering in the country.
The list goes on with many more who have excelled in the field of engineering as Emirati women have all the qualities that enable them to reach global standards and contribute effectively to serving our country and its leaders with pride and dignity.
Emirati women have had more than their fair share of contributions in all the achievements made in the UAE. They are active members of society, breaking prevailing barriers and achieving brilliant achievements day after day.
Emirati women account for 44.5% of engineering students in the country, compared to 20% in Germany, for example, and 18% in the United Kingdom. This is thanks to the wise leadership, represented by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the State, who recognises the importance of women and removes obstacles to enable them to innovate, work, and participate constructively in the development and progress of the United Arab Emirates.
