The Leopard 2A8 is the latest upgraded version of the German main battle tank, Leopard 2. This version was developed from the Leopard 2A7HU tank, which was designed for Hungary in 2023. The German armed forces were considering an initial order of 18 Leopard 2A8 tanks.
Once in service, the new tanks will replace the 18 German Leopard 2A6 tanks that were donated to Ukraine. The new tanks can enter service with the German army by 2025.
So far, the German Ministry of Defence is committed to upgrading its fleet of Leopard 2 tanks rather than transitioning to a new main battle tank, and once in service, the Leopard 2A8 will be among the best main battle tanks in the world.
