The United States Marine Corps has begun deploying and testing the Medium-Range Intercept Capability (MRIC) to enhance the protection of military bases against missiles and unmanned aerial systems across the Indo-Pacific region.
The MRIC is based on technology derived from Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system and employs US-manufactured SkyHunter interceptors, capable of engaging aerial threats at ranges of up to 70 kilometres. The system also incorporates advanced radar technology, enabling it to detect and engage multiple targets simultaneously.
Washington plans to equip three Marine Corps battalions with the MRIC system by 2028, strengthening their air defence capabilities and operational readiness. The programme also reflects the United States’ broader effort to expand domestic air defence capabilities while addressing evolving missile and drone threats.
