Regular inspection and digital cleaning of electronic devices has emerged as one of the most effective preventive measures for enhancing cybersecurity, as individuals and organisations become increasingly dependent on smartphones, tablets, and computers for daily activities and business operations.
According to the UAE Cyber Security Council, routine maintenance of personal electronic devices—including mobile phones and tablets—can reduce cyber incidents and attacks by as much as 30 per cent. The practice provides users with an additional layer of protection against malware and other growing cyber threats.
The Council explained that the accumulation of unnecessary files and unused data can create opportunities for malicious software to infiltrate devices, increasing the risk of data loss, privacy breaches, and the exploitation of security vulnerabilities to gain access to sensitive information.
In addition to cybersecurity concerns, unused files and neglected applications can negatively affect device performance. Common warning signs include slower operating speeds, recurring system errors, unusual notifications, and depleted storage capacity, all of which may indicate the need for a thorough digital clean-up and security assessment.
The Council noted that adopting a simple digital hygiene routine can significantly improve overall cyber resilience. Recommended measures include using trusted security software to scan devices for malware, deleting unnecessary files and applications, and regularly updating operating systems and software to address vulnerabilities and enhance performance.
It stressed that neglecting these basic practices creates opportunities for cybercriminals to exploit security weaknesses. Effective protection against digital threats, the Council said, begins with simple daily actions undertaken by users themselves and forms an essential part of responsible cyber behaviour.
The Council further warned that the accumulation of unused files and data does more than slow device performance. It can also create favourable conditions for malicious software, including viruses, spyware, ransomware, and other forms of malware designed to disrupt systems, steal information, or encrypt files and demand payment for their recovery.
Digital cleaning can also help reduce exposure to other cyber threats, including phishing attacks and deceptive messages aimed at tricking users into revealing sensitive information such as passwords, banking credentials, and credit card details.
According to the Council, regularly applying digital hygiene practices reflects a strong awareness of cybersecurity and requires a commitment to safe online habits. This includes staying informed about emerging cyber threats and ensuring that security software remains updated, as these tools represent one of the first lines of defence against cyberattacks.
Beyond strengthening protection, routine device maintenance delivers additional benefits, including improved system performance, extended device lifespan, and more efficient use of technology. These advantages can contribute to greater digital productivity for both individuals and organisations.
The UAE Cyber Security Council emphasised that maintaining a clean digital environment is no less important than preserving a clean physical environment. Small details and everyday habits, it noted, can often make the difference between a secure device and one vulnerable to cyber intrusion or data loss.
