Complications of Chronic Constipation

The German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases stated that constipation becomes chronic when bowel movements occur less than 3 times per week for at least 12 consecutive weeks.

Other symptoms of chronic constipation include hard, lumpy stools, a feeling of blockage in the rectum, incomplete bowel emptying, abdominal pressure and pain, nausea, and laxative dependence.

The Society added that chronic constipation can lead to serious consequences such as haemorrhoids, faecal incontinence, anal fissures, rectal prolapse (protrusion of the rectum downwards), and proctitis.

Dealing with Constipation

To tackle chronic constipation, it is better to consume foods rich in dietary fibre at a rate of 30 grams per day, which sources include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes.

It is also important to drink adequate fluids at a rate of 1.5 to 2 litres per day, in addition to exercising regularly to stimulate bowel movements.

If these measures fail to relieve chronic constipation, one should consult a doctor.
