India has conducted a successful trial of a torpedo launch system assisted by Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART), an innovative technology for anti-submarine warfare.
The SMART system, specially designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), significantly expands the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine operations by enabling precise torpedo launches over hundreds of kilometres.
The missile utilizes an inertial navigation system for mid-course guidance, with updates available via data link, and a homing sonar head for final guidance, ensuring accurate target tracking until impact.
This successful test represents a crucial milestone in modernizing India’s defence technology and enhancing its maritime security posture against submarine threats.
