The United Kingdom has successfully completed operational trials integrating AH-64E Apache helicopters with unmanned aerial systems under the Drone Wingman concept, aimed at enhancing battlefield awareness while reducing the exposure of crewed aircraft to hostile threats.
The unmanned aircraft are designed to carry out reconnaissance missions, identify targets, and transmit real-time data directly to the helicopter crew, enabling Apache helicopters to engage threats from greater stand-off distances with improved precision and survivability.
The programme forms part of the UK’s adoption of the Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) concept, which integrates crewed and unmanned platforms within a unified combat network. The trials reflect the growing emphasis among Western armed forces on employing artificial intelligence and network-enabled systems to enhance the effectiveness of air operations in modern combat environments.
