The Health Benefits of Walking Barefoot

There are numerous health benefits of walking barefoot, as it helps strengthen the muscles in the soles of the feet and can prevent them from deteriorating over time, stated Dr Matthias Manke.

Prevention of Heel Spurs

The German orthopaedic specialist also noted that walking barefoot can help prevent the development of heel spurs, a painful bony growth resembling a thorn that often forms due to untrained foot muscles.

Dr Manke pointed out that the feet contain many free nerve endings that receive various stimuli, sending new signals to the body. This can have a positive impact, potentially alleviating pain in the neck, back, or lumbar region.

Warning for Neuropathy Sufferers!

However, Dr Manke warned that walking barefoot may not be suitable for individuals with polyneuropathy, a condition that leads to reduced sensation in the feet. This can result in injuries going unnoticed, such as cuts or wounds.

This advice is particularly important for diabetic patients, as they often suffer from polyneuropathy and should exercise caution when walking without shoes.
