Australia Conducts First Trials of Locally Built AS9 Huntsman Howitzer

Australia has successfully completed the initial trials of its first locally manufactured AS9 Huntsman, produced at Hanwha Aerospace’s facility in Geelong. The programme includes the production of 30 self-propelled howitzers and 15 armoured ammunition resupply vehicles.

The AS9 Huntsman is based on the K9 Thunder, incorporating modifications to meet the operational requirements of the Australian Army. The system offers a firing range of more than 40 kilometres, a digital fire-control system, high mobility, and a rapid rate of fire, enhancing its effectiveness in modern artillery operations.

The programme reflects Canberra’s commitment to strengthening its domestic defence industrial base, reducing reliance on overseas suppliers, and improving the operational readiness of its armed forces to address future regional security challenges.
