Russia Develops ‘Darwin-Z’ Smart Net to Counter Drone Threats

Russia has developed a new anti-drone net system, named “Darwin-Z”, designed to improve protection against unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks, particularly FPV drones.

The system features a smart net structure capable of automatically contracting or narrowing its openings after being struck by a drone-induced explosion. This adaptive response helps limit structural damage and maintain overall integrity during repeated impacts.

The design is based on a Z-shaped cellular configuration that does not disintegrate upon detonation. Instead, it redistributes blast pressure across the structure, reportedly reducing damage by up to 50 per cent.

Constructed from lightweight polypropylene with an approximate density of 40 g/m², the net is supplied as a single ready-to-install unit. It can be mounted on either metal or wooden poles, offering flexibility for rapid deployment in field conditions.

The system incorporates reinforced edges that function as load-bearing cables, enhancing stability and durability when installed over critical infrastructure.
