India deploys new marine research vessel

India recently launched a new marine research vessel, the second SVL-class vessel built for the Indian Navy under contracts signed between the Navy, L&T, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).

In 2018, the Indian Navy had signed contracts with GRSE to acquire 4 “SVL” class ships, the first of which was launched in December of last year.

These ships can carry a crew of 235 people, move at a speed of 18 knots, and travel 6,500 nautical miles on each mission.

These vessels are designed in a way that enables them to operate in shallow waters and participate in search and rescue operations and each vessel can carry 4 small research boats and a helicopter.
