Ukrainian Firm Develops Low-Cost Air Defence System

Ukrainian defence company Fire Point has announced the development of a low-cost air defence system intended to rival the Patriot platform, with the goal of reducing the cost of ballistic missile interception to below $1 million per shot.

The initiative comes in response to the high cost and limited availability of existing air defence systems, as intercepting a single ballistic missile can require the launch of multiple interceptors worth several million dollars.

Drawing on Ukraine’s combat experience, the company aims to create more affordable defensive solutions while pursuing co-operation with European firms in radar and guidance technologies.

Fire Point plans to carry out its first test interception by 2027, in parallel with wider efforts to expand exports of Ukrainian military technology.
