South Korea is developing a new artificial intelligence-enabled radar designed to detect, track, and classify small unmanned aerial systems and other low-signature aerial threats as part of efforts to strengthen its air defence capabilities against growing security challenges.
The programme is being developed through a partnership between Blighter Surveillance Systems and JoongAng Advanced Materials. The system incorporates AI algorithms capable of distinguishing drones from birds, significantly reducing false alarms while improving target identification.
The radar is expected to be integrated into a layered air defence network combining surveillance systems, electronic jamming capabilities, and laser weapons, enhancing response times and the protection of national airspace. The programme reflects Seoul’s broader strategy of adopting intelligent defence technologies to address the evolving challenges of modern warfare.
