The United States Army has awarded ThinKom Solutions a contract worth up to $49 million to develop and test the Alecto mobile counter-drone system, which uses high-power microwave technology to defeat unmanned aerial systems.
The contract covers the development of up to four prototypes, with field testing scheduled for 2027. The system is designed to counter small drones and swarms by directing electromagnetic energy at them to disrupt or damage their electronic components, rather than relying on missiles or conventional ammunition.
Alecto is also designed for use by mobile ground forces, with the ability to engage drone threats while on the move. This capability could enhance the ability of military units to respond to dense and sustained drone attacks while maintaining operational mobility.
