Abu Dhabi University Secures Patent for AI-Powered Application Supporting People of Determination

Abu Dhabi University has been awarded a patent for “HearMe,” an innovative artificial intelligence-powered application designed to translate multiple sign languages, enabling more seamless communication for individuals with hearing impairments across different countries. The development marks a significant step in advancing inclusion and ensuring that cutting-edge technologies are accessible to all.

The application was developed by Dr Muzaffar Atti, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology, in collaboration with alumna Reem Al Bastami, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology.

“HearMe” aligns closely with the UAE’s national policy for empowering people of determination, which focuses on reducing inequality, promoting fairness, and enhancing digital skills. The application has been designed to support individuals with hearing impairments in fully participating in higher education and vocational training, contributing to more inclusive learning environments and opening new academic and career pathways.

The app offers real-time, two-way translation between sign language and written text. It converts hand gestures into written words while also transforming text into animated sign language. Supporting multiple sign language systems—including American Sign Language and French Sign Language—the platform enables users from diverse linguistic backgrounds to communicate effectively, reducing barriers related to accessibility and language differences.

Dr Atti emphasised that, amid rapid advancements in AI, there is a growing need to translate these developments into practical, scalable solutions with tangible societal impact. He noted that “HearMe” was developed with the clear objective of facilitating communication for all and addressing real-world challenges, thereby enhancing the participation of individuals with hearing impairments in academic and professional settings.

He added that the patent reflects the university’s commitment to applied scientific research and its support for national priorities in inclusion, accessibility, and sustainable development.

The application enables seamless communication in classrooms, training programmes, and workplace environments, helping to remove longstanding barriers to equal opportunity and full participation for people with hearing impairments.

The university continues to play a leading role in promoting accessibility and empowering people of determination across the UAE through sustainable initiatives. These include the development of “HearMe” and the previously launched “Future Social Inclusion Advocates Programme,” implemented in collaboration with Ma’an, Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination, and Key2enable.

Through these efforts, Abu Dhabi University continues to translate its Vision 2027 into tangible institutional practices, embedding inclusion and innovation while strengthening its broader societal impact within its academic and research ecosystem.
