China Unveils Upgraded FN-16 Short-Range Air Defence System

China has unveiled an upgraded version of its man-portable air defence system FN-16 during the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2026, featuring a twin-launcher configuration designed to enhance its effectiveness against modern aerial threats.

The improved design allows the system to carry and launch two ready-to-fire missiles, significantly increasing fire density and reducing reaction time in response to saturation attacks. The upgrade is aimed at strengthening interception capabilities against drones, cruise missiles, and attack helicopters.

The FN-16 operates within a range of 0.5 to 6 kilometres, with an engagement ceiling of up to 4,000 metres. It employs a dual infrared and ultraviolet guidance system, improving resistance to thermal jamming and countermeasures.

The system also incorporates a “fire-and-forget” capability, enabling operators to engage targets and immediately relocate or prepare for subsequent launches. With missile speeds exceeding 600 metres per second, the FN-16 is designed to provide a responsive and cost-effective short-range air defence solution for modern battlefield environments.
