Russia’s Rostec state corporation has developed a passive radar system designed to detect small, low-noise drones by capturing reflections of television and radio broadcast signals from moving objects. Unlike conventional radar, the system does not emit its own signals, making it more difficult to detect its location.
The system can determine the movement and coordinates of drones, even when they stop transmitting communications signals and rely on autonomous navigation. Its effectiveness can be further enhanced by integration with electronic reconnaissance, jamming and air defence systems, enabling the rapid provision of target data.
According to Rostec, the radar weighs approximately 180kg and does not interfere with civilian communications. These characteristics make it suitable for deployment in urban areas and near airports, where detecting small drones without disrupting existing communications is particularly important.
