Russia has revealed the first visual evidence of the S8000 Banderol cruise missile integrated with the Orion (Inokhodets) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a development that could significantly enhance its ability to conduct long-range precision strikes without placing manned aircraft at risk.
Footage released in July 2026 shows the Orion UAV carrying the Banderol missile beneath its fuselage, although no live launch has yet been demonstrated. The missile is believed to have an operational range of approximately 500 kilometres and is intended to bridge the capability gap between low-cost precision munitions and heavier, more expensive cruise missiles.
The integration of the two systems reflects Russia’s growing emphasis on developing cost-effective unmanned strike platforms capable of conducting long-range missions with greater operational flexibility. The programme represents a noteworthy step in the continued evolution of Russian unmanned combat capabilities.
