The UAE has become the second country in the world to approve Lipfendra, a new medication for treating adults with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), commonly known as “bad” cholesterol, including certain inherited forms of the condition. The treatment has been approved by the Emirates Drug Establishment for use as part of a physician-prescribed treatment plan.
The approval highlights the efficiency of the UAE’s national regulatory framework and reflects the country’s commitment to accelerating patient access to innovative medicines while supporting advances in healthcare and pharmaceutical innovation.
Lipfendra is an oral medication taken once daily and is designed to help lower LDL-C levels when used alongside a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Elevated LDL-C is recognised as one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease, making effective cholesterol management an important component of preventive healthcare.
The new treatment expands the range of therapeutic options available for adults whose condition requires additional medical intervention beyond lifestyle modifications alone. It also aligns with evidence-based medical practice and supports ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of pharmaceutical care.
The Emirates Drug Establishment encouraged members of the public, particularly individuals with high cholesterol, to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular exercise. It also urged patients to consult healthcare professionals for appropriate assessment and treatment, helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease while promoting long-term health and wellbeing.
