Japan is developing a multi-layered air and missile defence system to strengthen its ability to counter ballistic and cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems, low-flying aircraft and manoeuvring airborne targets.
The project is based on a network-centric defence concept that links radars, sensors and air, ground and maritime defence systems through a unified command-and-control network, enabling rapid data sharing and faster engagement decisions.
The system is also expected to integrate a range of interception capabilities, including missiles, guns and electronic warfare, to achieve a better balance between the cost of interception and the value of the target.
Japan is also leveraging artificial intelligence to analyse sensor data and prioritise threats, enhancing the protection of military bases and critical infrastructure against increasingly complex airborne threats.
