Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has launched the Yashima (PLH-46), a large patrol vessel built for the Japan Coast Guard as part of the second generation of the Mizuho-class. The vessel is scheduled to enter service in 2027, replacing an earlier vessel of the same name.
The Yashima is approximately 134 metres long and can reach speeds of more than 25 knots. It is designed for long-range patrol missions, territorial waters protection, search and rescue, and maritime security operations.
The vessel features a flight deck and hangar capable of accommodating two medium-sized helicopters. Its armament includes a 40mm gun, 20mm machine guns and remotely controlled water cannons.
The new patrol vessel will enhance Japan’s capabilities in coastal surveillance and maritime security, including efforts to counter smuggling, piracy and illegal fishing, while also supporting disaster relief and responses to maritime accidents.
