Leonardo Unveils Next-Generation Tiltrotor Technology

Italian aerospace giant Leonardo has unveiled its vision for the next generation of tiltrotor aircraft under the Next-Generation Civil Tiltrotor (NGCTR) programme, signalling a significant step forward in vertical-lift aviation.

Building on the Leonardo AW609 tiltrotor, the new concept incorporates more efficient turboprop engines and a lightweight composite airframe, alongside a fully digital cockpit featuring an open-system architecture and integrated artificial intelligence. The aircraft is expected to achieve speeds exceeding 280 knots while retaining vertical take-off and landing capabilities.

The NGCTR is being designed to undertake a range of missions, including special forces operations, medical evacuation, and search and rescue. Through this programme, Italy aims to strengthen European technological sovereignty and compete with US initiatives in the advanced vertical-lift sector.
